Mulberry Talent Partners has joined with our client in NE Portland to find an experienced Payroll Specialist for their team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that all employees are paid accurately, in a timely manner, and with the correct withholdings and deductions. Candidates with Banner Software experience are strongly preferred


Responsibilities at a glance:

·         Responsible for accurately processing monthly payroll utilizing the Banner software system.

·         Responsible for new employee set-up as well as changes to existing employee’s positions, or changes to employee payroll deductions (donations, garnishments, withholding taxes, etc.).

·         Responsible for the administration of the electronic timecard system for non-exempt employees including set-up of new employee timecards, maintenance of existing timecards, troubleshooting timecard errors, communicating and enforcing deadlines with employees and timecard approvers, as well as troubleshooting all timecard questions from employees and approvers.

·         Primary point of contact for general payroll inquiries.

·         Maintain electronic Payroll records including employee records and Federal, State and Local tax filings and notices.

·         Serve as backup to Payroll Supervisor for bi-weekly payroll processing, off-cycle payroll payments, and the processing of Federal, State, and Local Withholding tax payments and filings and perform other clerical and payroll functions as directed by the Payroll Supervisor.



·         Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred

·         3+ years’ progressively responsible experience in payroll processing

·         3+ years’ experience successfully working in a computer-based accounting environment

·         Experience with SCT Banner software is highly preferred

·         Able to perform high-volume data entry with high accuracy and attention to detail

Payroll Manager

In this role, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all payroll administration activities for the organization. Candidates with Banner Software experience are strongly preferred.  


Responsibilities at a glance:


  • Performs and supervises all activities necessary to process one or more payrolls, including supervising and/or maintaining related records, voluntary deduction reports, processing involuntary deductions such as levies and garnishments.  In addition:
  • Critically reviews and analyzes current processing operations related to payroll, benefits and tax procedures in order to recommend and implement changes leading to best-practices operations within the payroll system.
  • Supervise payroll staff and work closely with Benefits Administrator to ensure accurate benefit deductions and record keeping are occurring.  
  • Ensure timely remission of employee benefit deductions to specified vendors and associated benefit payment reconciliations.
  • Ensure responses to employee inquiries and requests regarding payroll matters are handled promptly, courteously, while maintaining personnel and operational confidentiality.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and, advising management on needed actions.
  • Manage and oversee payroll administration including multi-state, multi-jurisdiction state and local tax rules.
  • Reconcile monthly payments made to Federal, State, and local wage and hour regulations to quarter and annual reports.  Prepare calendar year-end filings, to include W-2’s.  Audit W-4s, payroll balance sheets, year-to-date earnings, etc.



·         Bachelor’s degree in related field

·         3+ years’ experience in payroll processing, with preference for multi-state

·         5+ years’ experience successfully working in a computer-based accounting environment

·         SCT Banner experience is required

·         Supervisory experience preferred

·         Highly organized and able to work efficiently in a high-volume, fast-paced environment

The Payroll Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of complex general ledger accounting and reconciliation functions as well as standard payroll calculations. This position requires a demonstrated commitment to attention to detail, quality, and accuracy. 

Key Qualifications and Competencies Needed for Success:

·         Working knowledge of state, federal and local tax regulations and laws.

·         Performs a wide variety of accounting functions related to biweekly payroll of the Cambia companies.

·         Establishes and maintains a close working relationship with the payroll department and the accounting department to ensure the accounting properly reflects the operations. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures, as well as resolving accounting related problems, including management fees and payroll.

·         Completes monthly reconciliation of General Ledger liability accounts and research to bring these accounts to a zero balance.  Includes writing of journal entries to make corrections and work with cost and financial accounting staff.

·         Complete account reconciliations on payroll deductions, taxes withheld and paid.

·         Completes monthly balancing of payroll dollar interface into general ledger.

·         Performs audits of various payroll areas prepares materials for external or internal auditors.

·         Prepares bonus calculations for payroll and reclassifications between departments relating to payroll allocation.

·         Ensures all month-end processes are followed and completed in a timely and accurate manner.

·         Strong computer skills including spreadsheet development, report generation and presentation development.  Strong Microsoft Excel skills and experience. 

·         Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills and the ability to communicate and coordinate activities with varying levels of staff, leaders and external vendors.

·         Ability to exercise judgment, initiative and discretion regarding confidential and sensitive matters.

·         Conducts bi-weekly audits of payroll processing files and data ensuring employees are paid on an accurate and timely basis. 

·         Develop monthly metrics for all payroll related functions.

·         Working knowledge of Lawson, Oracle, Peoplesoft payroll systems helpful.

Normally to be proficient in the competencies listed above:

Payroll Accountant would have a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Human Resources or related field with 3 years Payroll experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

General Functions and Outcomes:

·         General oversight of one or more functional areas within Finance Operations.  Supports business activities across all Cambia operational states maintaining a high level of work quality.

·         Reviews department procedures and recommends changes or updates and assists with implementation activities.  Oversees user maintenance of applicable systems, works with various internal departments to resolve system issues.

·         Assists in improving departmental performance by identifying and evaluating work trends, helping develop appropriate actions. 

·         Recommends actions when problems or issues related to Payroll reconciliations are identified.

·         Assists in the maintenance and development of desk procedures, policies and procedures.  May assist in generating user documentation for processes, policies and procedures in response to business changes and ensures staff are updated on any changes or modifications.

·         Ability to respond to all internal/external questions pertaining to employee time cards.
